Elche do have Europe's biggest Palm Garden with about 300 000 trees.
Many of them are more than 2 000 years old. When in Elche (200 000
inhabitants), you can visit museums, Arabic baths, churches etc. There
are not many interesting accommodation alternatives in Elche, but 35 km
south west of town we have the town of Orihuela with a good hotel (see
"Accommodation" to the left).

Some towns like Venice in
Italy, Cádiz in Spain and Dubrovnik in Croatia do have a seaside location
which makes them utterly attractive. Peñiscola do also have a very good
location. When in the old town, you have sea almost at all sides. The old
town is a mix of Andalucian "white town" and Cádiz (a very good
combination!). Outside the old town are plenty of modern and unattractive
hotels to be found. An alternative is to stay in lovely Morella, 80 km
inland of Peñiscola or in Tortosa, 70 km north east, in Catalonia.

You probably have heard
about Hannibal. In a war against the Romans (Sagunt belonged to the Romans),
Sagunt was totally destroyed by Hannibal and the inhabitants were killed. Today Sagunt
offers the remains of a huge fortress, an amphitheatre (partly restored)
and several other interesting buildings. The accommodation alternatives in
Sagunt doesn't knock our sock off! But Valencia is just 30 km away.
