**

Haro

Nájera

Santo Domingo de la Calzada

La Rioja is a small region with few interesting towns. But La Rioja is world famous because of the wine. This make a stopover in this region a good choice. There are wine tasting bodegas everywhere. Regarding accommodation, please consider the options in Rioja Alavesa, which belongs to the Basque country, but border La Rioja. Laguardia in Rioja Alavesa is a very good choice.

The nature in La Rioja vary from the mountains/highland in the north to the lover Ebro valley in the south west and the higher mountains further south (1 500 meters). The area are greener than Castilla, but not as green as the Basque Country.

On their way to Santioago de Compostela, many pilgrims have stopped in this town. There are two Paradors in Santo Domingo de la Calzada, but just 5 000 inhabitants!

3Excursions

*San Millán de la Cogolla **

The well known monastery Monasterio de San Millán de Suso is situated in the little town of San Millán de la Cogolla, 22 km south of Santo Domingo de la Calzada. Not far away is Monasterio de San Millán de Yuso, considered as the cradle of the Spanish language (because here we'll find the oldest writing in Catalan). For more information about the monastery, please try here (in Spanish). Please have a look at this hotel as well.

*Ezcaray **

Ezcaray is located 14 km south of Santo Domingo de la Calzada. What makes this town interesting for a visit is the extremely good restaurant; Echaurren. It's by many considered the best restaurant in La Rioja. A new restaurant with a "modern cuisine" has been opened in the same building, and here are two good accommodation alternatives in Ezcaray.
