Picos de Europa is a mountain area on the border between Cantabria, Asturias and Castilla y León. The highest peaks reach about 2 500 above sea level. Unlike the Alps, here aren't cable cars everywhere and not many mountains huts. In Picos de Europa you are in the "wilderness", but several good accommodation alternatives are available. A trip to Picos de Europe should be combined with some historical towns in Castilla or some days in San Sebastián.

In the eastern part of Picos de Europa, we'll find the charming village of Potes. From Potes you can drive north towards the coast, or south in direction Castilla and pass by Fuente Dé (where there are a cable car and a Parador). From the west (Asturias) you will probably reach Picos de Europa via the town of Cangas de Onís (6 000 inhabitants) with it's medieval bridge.

Some places on earth are just breathtaking beautiful. The nature around San Vicente de la Barquera is such a place. It's a costal town at the Asturian border. 10 km east of San Vicente de la Barquera we'll find Comillas (2 500 inhabitants). Comillas is well known because of it's interesting buildings, but the town has also a great location.

Santander (200 000 inhabitants) is the capital of Cantabria. Many tourists reach Santander by the ferry arriving from Great Britain. A great fire in 1941 did destroy much of the old centre of Santander. A stopover in Santander is Ok, but it isn't one of Spain's great cities for a visitor.

Santillana del Mar

Museo de Altamira

Santillana del Mar with it's 4 000 inhabitants is one of Spain's loveliest villages. There are probably no other village in northern Spain which can compete with Santillana in this aspect. There are plenty of accommodation in Santillana, but during weekends and the summer season, the town is extremely popular by Spanish visitors. The village is pretty in all aspects (like an Austrian village/town). And since most visitors are Spanish tourists, they don't destroy the atmosphere of Santillana. But try to avoid the summer season and weekends.

Outside the village are some of the world's most beautiful cave paintings to be found, Cuevas de Altamira. The cave is closed for visitors, preventing it being damaged, but you can have a look at some copies in the museum.
