The Canary Islands have been a popular tourist destination for several decades. The islands do have one attraction and that's the climate. The climate is pretty good all year. Good beaches do also attract sunbathers. If you are not primary looking for sun and beaches, this part of Spain won't be your first choice. The nature on some of the islands are uninteresting/ugly (but not all islands!) and here is plenty of modern and unattractive hotels. You will also find an atmosphere that definitely isn't Spain, but perhaps Germany, England or Scandinavia....... (because of all the tourist). While enchanting hotels are popping up on Mallorca, there aren't too many of those good alternatives on the Canary Islands yet.

But some good hotels are at offer and some of the islands do have lovely nature. There are some very pretty towns as well. A combination of Gran Canaria, Tenerife and La Palma will be the best combination. Ferries are connecting the different islands. Please read about the different islands and destinations below.

Gran Canaria do have more to offer than sun, beaches and cheep alcohol! The city of Las Palmas is worth a visit and when driving around there are several small towns and nice scenery to find. But please combine Gran Canaria with one or two of the other Canary Islands like Tenerife or La Palma.

Las Palmas (400 000 inhabitants) is a mix of modern department buildings and an old town with beautiful houses. The areas of La Vegueta and Triana are the oldest parts of the town. The beach, Playa de Las Canteres is a gem! But since the southern part of the island is warmer and do have less rain, most tourist prefer the south.

La Palma is the green island. If we compare it with the most gold island; Lanzarote, it's like comparing the moon with a tropical paradise! Boats are leaving Tenerife for La Palma. This makes La Palma and Tenerife a good and easy combination. With a rental car you can explore both islands.

Santa Cruz de la Palma (20 000 inhabitants) was during the 16th century a very important harbour town, but went later on into decline. This has resulted in a very interesting town with many beautiful buildings. The town with it's white houses, wooden balconies and cosy streets is one of the most beautiful towns on the Canary Islands. But here is of course some ugly modern buildings as well.

Tenerife is the Canary Island which can offer the most interesting and beautiful towns. Here is artificial beaches and Spain's highest mountain. Most ferries to the small islands in the west (La Gomera, La Palma or El Hierro) are leaving from Tenerife. Some days on Tenerife with a rental car and then a visit to one of the small islands (like La Palma) may be a very good choice for a Canary Island vacation.

La Laguna as the town often is called is a university town which was the capital of Tenerife until 1723, when the capital was moved to Santa Cruz. La Laguna is on the Uesco's Heritage list. When you stroll around in the tiny streets, or visit one of the monumental buildings, you'll understand that this isn't just an ordinary town. 150 000 people live here.

Santa Cruz (250 000 inhabitants) is the capital of Tenerife (and of the western Canary Islands).  Santa Cruz is also a big harbour with many buildings in 19th century colonial style. Some interesting modern buildings can be seen as well. Santa Cruz and San Cristobal de La Laguna are just 10 km apart and can be considered as one destination.

El Hierro is really in the middle of nowhere! Just 10 000 people live here and the island doesn't have many hotels. Located west of the other Canary Island, the climate isn't as good as on the other islands. And here aren't many good beaches. If you are going to visit a couple of islands, don't choose El Hierro. But if you want some days on a remote island, have a look at the accommodation alternatives (see to the left).

There are not tourists everywhere on La Gomera. The nature is pretty nice and this make the island an alternative for those who want an alternative holiday on the Canary Islands. It is wise to stay at the Parador in the "biggest" town, San Sebastián de La Gomera. Another option is to stay at Hotel Jardín Tecina where you get a magnificent view. But then you will have to buy the (expensive) food at the hotel. When staying at the Parador, you can use the restaurants etc. in San Sebastián de la Gomera. (see "Accommodation" to the left).

On this island the tourist authorities have enforced the building of  more small white houses and not a "Manhattan on the moon." The nature is gold and a bit "moonlike". The white houses do often have a simple exterior and this together with the gold landscape make not too many beautiful towns. If you are unsure which Canary Island to visit, try some of the other islands before visiting Lanzarote.
