This "hidden treasure" in
Andalucía has become popular among travellers. Not far from Granada or
Sierra Nevada, and not far from the coast, but still pretty remote! When
the Moors was expelled from Granada in 1492, they got refugee in Las
Alpujarras for several generations.

Most visitor arrive in the fascinating city of Granada because of the
magnificent Alhambra. The Moorish Alhambra is a unique building world wide. When
strolling around in the Alhambra admiring the great architecture, you will
also have a wonderful view of the city. The garden, Generalife, is beautiful
as well. Please buy the ticket on the
Net before you arrive in Granada because
only a limited number of visitors are allowed to enter.
Albayzin,
with it's white houses and tiny and windy streets, is climbing the hills of
Granada. Much renovating has still to be done in this part of Granada, but
Albayzin becomes nicer every year and here are several very atmospheric
hotels. The more modern (but still pretty old) part of Granada do have many
very interesting and beautiful buildings. But the traffic is here very
disturbing. Hopefully this will get better soon. (There are many towns
around who have to get more pedestrian areas, not at least in Southern
Europe).
In Granada,
we'll find the most popular (and most expensive) Parador in Spain. It's
located inside the "Alhambra area". Because of the price and the location a
bit outside the city centre, it will perhaps be better to choose one of the
other interesting hotels (see "Accommodation" to the left), but have dinner
or lunch at the fabulous Parador. Not all of the restaurants in Granada do
have high quality (something we experience in many "mega tourist
destinations"). Please browse through the restaurants mentioned to the left.
Semana
Santa (the Easter Week) do also have much to offer on Granada, but is much
less extensive than in Sevilla.
Conclusion: Try to visit during the spring or autumn and book a good hotel
and the Alhambra tickets well in advance. When in Granada, visit the
Alhambra, stroll around all parts of the city and eat at the recommended
restaurants. As Granada is full of history, please read about what happened
in Granada before 1492 before visiting.

Guide to Montefrio

Below a small and old
castle, we'll find this town with 9 000 inhabitants. The white town of
Montefrio is visited by too many tourists. Please try "Accommodation" to
the left to find some interesting alternatives. |
