Before you book accommodation in Portugal there are some information which is very useful. Portuguese hotels are classified with stars, as in many other countries. But please don't be fouled by this star system. The start mostly tells us how many facilities the hotel has, not if the hotel is cozy, well kept, atmospheric etc. 4 start doesn't seem to difficult to obtain in Portugal, so don't expect any luxury at a 4 star hotel. Some 4 star hotels are good, other is dull and has a medium standard. Many of the newer hotels in Portugal look like dull block of flats of the 1960's . Try instead one of the historical houses which are converted into accommodation. Many of the are situated in very rural areas, making interesting accommodation in urban areas more difficult to find. Portugal has the Pousadas, something similar to the Spanish Paradors. But not all the Pousadas are very well kept, and the are more expensive than the Paradors ion Spain! But the historical Pousadas are very interesting. Interesting accommodation outside the big cities are mostly inexpensive (except the pousadas).
