The old university city of Coimbra is worth a visit. By climbing a lot of step stairs you will reach the university area. This old part of the town is full of charm. But be aware of the fact that Coimbra is a poor town compared to most other western towns. Most houses are badly kept. This makes Coimbra not the most interesting place in Portugal, but well worth a stop over.

This former royal castle in the Bussaco Forest is today a hotel. No pool, but the guests can use a pool and tennis court at a hotel 15 km away. |

Just a marvellous hotel. Not many hotels of this calibre are to be found in Portugal. The prices are reasonable compared to the very high standard of the hotel. The hotel is situated outside the city. Just the most expensive rooms are to be found in the old building, the ordinary double rooms are in a new wing. |

A more affordable alternative than Quinta das Lágrimas. Be sure to ask for a quiet room (traffic noise from outside). The hotel has had it's better days, but there are not much good accommodation in Coimbra, so this is the best one (except Lágrimas). |
