General Information

More and more people use the Internet to book a flight, a hotel room or to rent a car. This is not always easy. Where shall we book? Who is the best and cheapest provider of flights?  and so on..  We will here try to give you some good advices about how to book.

You may have heard about people booking on the Net and loosing a lot of money because the company where they booked was a dubious one or went broke. This is very rare but can happen. If you want to make a major booking, it's important to make sure the booking company is serious and has insurance. A mail to some of their clients can be the best way to get this information. We would not advise you just to use the major booking companies on the Net, they are sometimes too expensive.

Sometimes the best way to make a booking may be to use the Internet to find some good deal or to find a nice hotel, but to call the Travel Agency if you have some questions.

Below there are links to many companies where you can book a flight, a hotel room, rent a car etc.

Please try these links, but to book through these companies isn't always the cheapest alternative. If you want to find a hotel, you may often get more help and get a better deal by visiting the hotels own Home Page.

Flights

Many travellers use the Net to book flight tickets. To be sure that your reservation is secure, please contact  IATA and check that the booking company is a member of them. If they are, your booking is OK.

Please start by searching at AirWise to find all alternative routes and airlines for your trip. Do also try WhichBudget to see if there are any low budget airlines flying to your destination. When you have found one or more good alternatives, try the airline's own Home Page to check the price. (They are often, but not always cheaper than the Internet Travel Agencies). But before you order the tickets, please have a look at AirlineQuality. Some airlines do get very many complaints from their passengers. It would often be wise to avoid those airlines. Air Berlin and NIKI are often regarded as the best low budget airlines in Europe (low price, but high standard). Ryan Air do have many passengers from UK because of the low prices, but they also have very many complaints.

Accommodation

Accommodation is very important for all tourists. If you want a expensive hotel, many Home Pages at the Internet will give you a lot of alternatives.

But many people want to find some place to stay, not too expensive, but cosy and with atmosphere. We have tried to find such good value hotels, pensions etc. at our destinations.  Please browse through our more than 1000 selected accommodation alternatives here. Do you know about such a hotel which we can include at our destination pages, please feel free to mail.

If you want to go to one of our destinations, please first browse through the hotels, and then it would be wise to compare the prices at the hotels own Home Page with the prices you may get using the different travel agencies on the Net (se above). Some big hotels (mostly in the cities) do at some periods of the year offer the best price through the Internet Agencies, but many small and very good hotels offer the lowest price directly from their own Home Page. And a great advantage when booking directly from the hotel is that you can come with special wishes and questions, to ensure your stay there will be perfect!

Trains

The new High Speed lines are once again making trains an interesting option when travelling in Europe. To travel by High Speed trains are much more comfortable than travel by air! The TGV in France from Paris to Lyon was the first High Speed line, but later on many French cities are connected by very fast trains. The Germans has also began to rebuild their rail network. Today a very good High Speed line operates Hamburg-Berlin. In Spain the AVE travelling from Madrid to Seville opened in 1992. And the Madrid-Barcelona connection will soon be opened. The AVE in Spain is famous for "never " arrive late. If the train arrive in Seville or Madrid more than 5 minutes late, the passengers will get their money back. But not more that 1 in 800 trains are late.....

Car rental

A week or ten days driving in Toscana and then some days in Florence or Venice? Driving the Pyrenees and some days in Barcelona or San Sebastián? More and more people choose to "Fly and Drive" when on holiday. And of course many tourists just drive their own car.

If you want to see nature and small village and towns far away from home, to rent a car will be a good option. But when you rent a car there are several things to keep in mind. There are extras to pay. The price you will find in the brochure or at the Internet is not the final one. First, make sure that there are free mileage, that you can drive as much as you want without paying extra.  There may also be extra to pay if you want to pick up the car at an airport or if you want to leave the car another place then where you picked it up. Young drivers may also pay extra. Roof rack and children seat usually costs extra as well. And to rent a car in one European country and drop it in another tends to be very expensive! And do remember to ask for a car with Air Condition!

There doesn't tend to be any major problem to find the prices of the extras mentioned above. But you also need some insurances. You need insurance against damage of the car, theft and injuring a third part. You your self will in most cases be insured through your travel insurance. Some of these insurances use to be included in the rent. But you can get even better insurances by paying extra.

Even if you have to pay some extra to pick up the car at the airport where you arrive, it will be the best choice in most cases. To start driving a new car in the middle of a huge city is no good idea.

When you pick up the car, please ask for a form to fill in if  the car do have any damages. Otherwise you can get problems when returning it. The company can say you have damaged the vehicle.

Do you think to rent a car sounds difficult? Please just have in mind what we have mentioned above when talking to the rental company or your travel agency. Please pick up the phone and call the first time you rent a car, don't just use the Internet. Be sure to get answers to anything you want to ask about.

Ferries

Cheaper flights have made problems for several of Europe's Ferry Companies. But some of them have met the competition by investing in bigger and more luxurious ships. Our Ferry trip can be a small cruise, but don't expect any extreme luxury.

Coaches

Cheap airline tickets and new high speed trains have made  long distance travel by coach in Europe less interesting. But for shorter distances where there are no high speed trains available , coaches are still very popular. Portugal have an old and not very good railway system (except the Lisbon-Porto route).  Therefore coaches are an very interesting options in Portugal (if you don't use a car).

In Spain with their very good roads, the best option will often be to rent a car (which is cheaper in Spain than in Portugal). Otherwise, coaches are a good alternative. But high speed trains will in the future be the main way of transportation between Spanish cities. We already have the very good Madrid-Seville line and the Madrid-Barcelona line will soon be opened.
